We went to Piedmont, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Apulia to find these pearls, sourced from three different grape varieties, cultivated in the smallest plots of land, but coming from farther territories... So, let us make room for the sapid Erbaluce, the aromatic Malvasia, of Greek roots, and the fresh Ribolla, from Slovenia. "Foreign" grapes, which have found their vocation in Italy.
Erbaluce di Caluso Doc
THE ERBALUCE IS A "MINOR" INDIGENOUS GRAPE, HARVESTED ON A SMALL PLOT OF LAND NOT FAR FROM TURIN, IN PIEDMONT, AND EXTREMELY VERSATILE FOR WINE MAKING (IT REPRESENTS A LANDMARK FOR STILL WINES IN PARTICULAR).
The colour is straw-yellow with golden reflections. This wine's bold scent includes notes of sage and aromatic herbs with a fruit-laden flavour, linked to refreshing notes of pear and grapefruit that create a pleasant and firm aromatic structure. The mouthfeel is consistent, well-balanced between acidity and softness, endowed with persistence and enhanced by a slight mineral touch.
Best to be enjoyed with: those who appreciate expressive wines, which are simple to enjoy and represent well the land of origin. Recommended with vegetable-based recipes or (not too complicated) fish dishes.
The Orsolani Winery
The Orsolani family started wine-making activities in Erbaluce, Piedmont, during 1894. After four generations, harvesting in the vineyards is still mainly manual, with little use of tractors; the energy for the cellar is almost fully generated with sun-power. The estate's activity is devoted to the production of wines from indigenous grapes. The total yearly production amounts to some 15,000 bottles (90% being Erbaluce, the most famous wine of the family).

ERBALUCE DI CALUSO DOC Orsolani
THE RIBOLLA GRAPE IS CULTIVATED ACROSS THE BORDER BETWEEN ITALY AND SLOVENIA. IT IS CAPABLE OF GIVING LIFE TO LIGHT AND REFINED WINES, MEANT TO BE ENJOYED IN THEIR YOUTH. THIS IS A VERSION PRODUCED BY A WINERY THAT, WHILE STILL EMERGING, HAS ALREADY BEEN PRAISED BY WINE INSIDERS. With a light straw-yellow colour and lime green reflections, on the nose this wine appears delicate but clean, with white flower, green apple and yellow grapefruit aromas. The palate is consistent with the nose, even more refreshing owing to its penetrating acidity. The finish is dry, lean, but not elusive at all. Best to be enjoyed with: by virtue of a light and joyous character, this white wine appeals, in particular, to a feminine palate. It performs best with simple and delicate sea appetizers, as well as with fresh cheeses.
The Ronco Blanchis Winery
The Ronco Blanchis winery is situated in the tiny hamlet of Mossa, on the sunny slopes of Colle Blanchis, in Friuli Venezia Giulia, close to Slovenia. The local soil is well known for the quality of white wines since the time of the Austrian Empire. In a remote past, the land belonged to the noble family of the Austrian Catterini de Herzberg and to Don Silverio de Bauger de Ribas y Corsi, Minister of the King of Spain.

Malvasia Bianca Igt Salento
HERE, IN SOUTHERN APULIA, WE HAVE FOUND A HIGH-CALIBRE WINE THAT ENTICES ALL SENSES WITH HARMONY, COMPLEXITY AND NEAT FRUIT-LADEN FLAVOURS; IT AUGURS WELL FOR AN EXTREMELY POSITIVE EVOLUTION WITH AGEING.
Marked by a straw-yellow colour with bright golden reflections, the wine is characterised by a complete bouquet with fragrances of broom, iris and acacia, alternated with generous sensations of pineapple, yellow peach, vanilla, almond and sea notes. In the mouth, this wine is extremely elegant and enthralling, with rare and singular gentleness, and conquers the taster with its roundness, counterbalanced by a fresh and fulfilling acid note.
Best to be enjoyed with: the marked aromaticity and the full rounded body of this wine make it mostly suitable for lovers of the Mediterranean cuisine: shellfish entrees, fish roulades, grilled tuna or swordfish fillet above all.
The Tenute Rubino Winery
In the mid-Eighties, the Rubino family started to build their wine estate, making acquisitions of a total of 500 hectares over a decade. A constant evolution and an almost scientific approach to vinification have led Tenute Rubino to become a brand known all over the globe and the benchmark for wine production in the Salento area.
