Friuli-Venezia Giulia has a unique geographical position at the crossroads of northeastern Italy, the Adriatic Sea, Austria and Slovenia that has brought it a rich mix of influences, terroirs and traditions. The region’s dry white wines (as some from Campania) are viewed as the best. They are mainly produced in small, high-quality family vineyards and mostly made from non-traditional grapes such as full-bodied Pinot Grigio, creamy and peachy Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling or Pinot Bianco. Nonetheless, a few local varietals deserve to be mentioned such as mineral Tocai or Picolit (used to make a rare dessert white).
