Taurasi is an important red wine from Campania, a region in Southern Italy. Taurasi is based principally on the Aglianico indigenous grape variety produced in the Province of Avellino. In spite of Taurasi’s ancient origins, it is also regarded as a modern wine. From the late 60’s Taurasi has grabbed international attention and since then, the area's popularity and reputation has soared. The wine is aged for about 2 years in tonneau and oak casks.
Taurasi by Pietracupa boasts a real sense of elegance; both subtlety and depth, power and freshness characterise this red on the nose and the palate. The complex nose combines a wealth of fresh dark fruits, a strong mineral personality with flecks of iron and a gamey, meaty tone. Meanwhile, the palate initially expresses fleshy, red stewed fruits which transform to earthy, animal notes and finally culminates in a long, white-peppery finish. The body is light but possesses a slight creaminess, the tannins are fine and the acidity bright. A powerful but approachable, lovely wine.
Best to be enjoyed with
The best way to pair Taurasi by Pietracupa is with roasted meats, wild game, truffles and aged cheeses. Try it with Risotto with porcini and black truffles.
The Winery: Pietracupa
The young and talented Sabino “Sammy Bruno” Loffredo has quickly gained a reputation within Italy and beyond for some of the best Greco and Fiano wines around; Greco by Pietracupa, in particular, is considered by many to be the single best example of this variety. You might say Sabino has certainly lived up to his award of “Up and coming winery of the year 2006” in the Gambero Rosso.
